“We love writing!”
Who wouldn’t be inspired to write sitting on a hill overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, after meeting an octopus or riding the ferry…
Each day, I take a small group of kids (upper elementary and middle school) on a new writing adventure. We gather in the East Bay, and then travel around the Bay Area to places where writing cannot help but be fun. We play word games, describe, give each other prompts, read for fun and learning, and write, write, write. After lunch, we shape what we’ve written into poems, stories, plays, nonfiction and more–then share, get feedback and rework.
Throughout the camp, writers learn elements of craft and also about their own individual voice and process. The emphasis is on exploration, experimentation and fun.
At the end of Write Around the Bay, campers have sampled different types of writing, read wonderful examples from published authors, learned and practiced 7 essential writing skills, and created a portfolio of work.
