College Applicants

college-signDuring the admissions process, the essay is one of the few components a student has control over. A thoughtfully planned essay can illustrate aspects of a student’s character and highlight components of a student’s experience that are not covered elsewhere in the application. A strong personal statement can move an applicant from “maybe” to “admit.”

I work with students on all steps of the writing process, from finding topics to final drafts, for all application essays:

  • 1 Common App essay
  • 4 UC essays
  • Supplemental private school essays (Why this school? and other prompts)

In the end, students will have engaging essays that are uniquely theirs, crafted specifically for the colleges of their choice. They will also have learned a writing process they will use again and again, in college and beyond.

Brainstorm & Plan

We start by looking closely at each prompt, brainstorming topics, discussing opportunities for reflection, and developing a structure to guide the first draft. We also look for opportunities to craft one essay for multiple applications.

Draft & Revise

I read and respond to each draft, asking questions, sharing feedback, and encouraging students—as they revise—to find details and insights that will bring their essays to life.

Polish & Submit

When a student has a final draft, we’ll check spelling and grammar carefully, and make sure the word count falls within the range established by the college.
